Licence Renewal
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced on Friday, June 30th, 2006 that the Point Lepreau Generating Station’s Nuclear Power Reactor Operating Licence has been renewed for a five-year period. The licence is valid until June 30th, 2011.
The application consisted of a two-day public hearing, held on February 16th, 2006 and May 18th, 2006. During this time, both written submissions and oral presentations were presented from NB Power Nuclear staff, CNSC staff and intervenors.
The CNSC made the following statement regarding their decision: “The Commission concluded that NB Power Nuclear is qualified to operate the facility and that it will make adequate provision for the protection of the environment, the health and safety of persons, and the maintenance of national security and measures required to implement international obligations to which Canada has agreed.”
As part of this decision, NB Power Nuclear will seek the approval of the CNSC before reloading fuel in the reactor and proceeding with the restart following the planned refurbishment outage.
